Makela Fence woodworking!

If everything goes to plan, this winter I'm going to set up to build garden structure products in the shop. I want to start out slowly by designing a few items and building those that would be cost-effective to ship across the country.

Back in the early '90s I partnered with my brother to set up a custom cabinet and furniture shop. That was before the Internet, so we didn't have that resource as a way to market and advertise our products. We also were set up in an area where there wasn't a high demand for custom cabinet work and furniture building.

Today tho, the market and advertising options are much different. We want to build some basic mailbox posts and display them on my website. We also have a lot of material that I saved to make cedar flower boxes for people for Memorial Day. Cedar arbors are another an item that I know are in high demand. At the present time, we buy them from a wholesaler if we're installing a fence where the customer wants a standard type arbor.

Our main objective is to offer quality custom work, but we feel there is a need for products that can compete in today's market to meet peoples' needs and budget.

My plan is to start out with outdoor-related products and if the demand is there to offer other products, we will do so.

Custom built

What is something that is custom built? How would you perceive something that is custom built? Is it something that is hand built? It can be but not necessarily.

Is it something that no one else has anything like? Most likely, but that is not necessarily true either, because someone might build something and then another person could come along and copy it. If that was to happen in a custom fence, deck or pergola you probably wouldn't know, or there might be some difference that you couldn't tell anyway.
Something custom made is designed, built and altered to suit specific needs or likenesses. It is something that is not traditional or standard, and never mass-produced. It is also built to order.

This blog site is a good example of something customized. The templates are standard but you have the customization link to make changes to your desires.

There are a lot of fence and deck builders that say they build custom products, but as soon as you mention change or show them a picture of something you want similarly built, they normally will run and you will never hear from them again. They would also be less likely to make changes after the project is started.

We at http://www.makcustomfence.com/ and http://www.gardenstructure.com/ would be excited to sit down with you to consult and design a fence, deck or pergola to meet your needs and budget.

Introduction

This is my very first blog, and I just want to introduce myself. My intention with this blog is to discuss mostly topics about the fence industry along with decks and pergolas. I'm sure we will stray off the subject from time to time though. That's OK.

I have been a carpenter for over 35 years and I would like to share my know-how and expertise with anyone who is interested. I love sharing my knowledge and learning from other people in the business. Things are always changing and we're never too old to learn more.

I own a small custom fence and deck business in the the south central part of Massachusetts. I still do a lot of the work myself. I have no objections to having my company grow but I want to do it slowly in order to keep the quality of the work to my standards. I believe in giving my customers the quality work they expect and pay for. We will get into more on the topic of quality in other topics.
